Written Profile

Rusty Robot (I'll come up with a better name later) (The alliteration is painful)

Rusty is a robot being manufactured in a giant, mass producing factory. The company builds and ships out robotic animals, ranging from the atypical domesticated animal, to something more "wild" and "exotic". Programmed to behave like an animal, they are built and shipped out to be made available to the everyday consumer. They are tweaked so they will obey what their human companion asks of them, with additional features such as higher intelligence and communications, taking "pets" to the next level.

Rusty was on the production line when he was accidentally turned on. Not being fully programmed, their "animal instincts" kicked in, and they desperately sought escape. Like in The Shawshank Redemption, the robot crawls through a tunnel, though it is filled with oil. Reaching the outside world at the end - a junkyard - rain cleans them off.

Basically my idea simmered down is; small robot > powered on and escapes through tunnel > finds freedom in a junkyard

As Rusty wasn't fully programmed and constructed at the time of the escape, he is faulty and is noticeably different to his robot counterparts.

The scene will start with Rusty crawling out from the tunnel, into a puddle of oil. This shot will pan, showing that rain is falling, which cleans off the oil Rusty is covered in oil. Realising he has made it, and found refuge in a junkyard (full of scraps from the factory), he holds his arms up, a high angle shot of his face turned to the sky - something he has never seen.

It is alike The Shawshank redemption in shots, though it parallels in genre, from a drama to a family film.

Initial Concept [14/07/15]

Brief: Take an iconic scene and change the genre

The Shawshank Redemption (escape scene) is what I selected for the assignment. I am switching it's drama genre to be a family genre short. The main character that I will be designing is a little robot escaping from a factory.

I intend to change the scene to be a escape through a tunnel to a junkyard, instead using similar camera shots and the rain to make The Shawshank Redemption as my inspiration identifiable.

Other Ideas I contemplated:
-  The Shining "Here's Jonny"; make it into a kids film where a little kid is knocking on a playhouse door

I chose not to run with this idea as I couldn't visualise effectively
- Matrix (bullet time) ; kids film where a school student is dodging paper spitballs
