Visual Research

Tea suggested looking at the french-japanese TV series Ulysses 31 for the character Nono.

Sam recommend the game Ratchet and Clank, for the robot Clank for inspiration in designing my robot.

Further recommendations came from Dane, showing me the game Machinarium.

Adrian, Oscar and Joanne also contributed, giving me examples such as The Iron Giant, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Transfomers and Big Hero 6.

This is Part One; I looked up a lot of robot characters I could think of, as well as people's suggestions.

Part of finding my visual research was thinking about both how robots were constructed, so I could keep this in mind for when I developed my character. Functionality in it's design is important - it needs to be convincing that they can move the way I intend them to. My visual research then branched out into potential animals that I could base my robot off.

For this, I looked at both robotic animals, and the real life model. I even spent a bit of time looking at videos and how animals walk and run and their natural behavior. I tried to keep this in mind in my selection, as I want my robot to somewhat mimic the actions of Andy, the main character in The Shawshank Redemption.
It's cute, but looks weird. Especially when
I think of building it in 3D.

Andy finally finds freedom - the final shot I want to use.
BUT HOW CAN AN ANIMAL DO THIS.

At first, this stunted my research, and made me somewhat frustrated. ANIMALS LOOK WEIRD WALKING ON TWO LEGS. I don't want to animate that! I realise that complete authenticity portrayal of the animal isn't necessary. These are ROBOTS.

This gave me the ease to conduct more visual research! I stopped thinking about accuracy and the realism of creating a mechanical animal.

I FORGOT TO ADD THE SECOND PART. COMING SOON.
